MARRIAGE

Marriage Preparation

(as published in THE ANGELUS, June-July 2014, page 15)

It is important for the couples intending to get married

to take note of the requirements as stipulated below.

These requirements must be strictly adhered to,

without any exception.

1.   In most cases a marriage preparation program has to be completed by those who want to get married. ... It is a must to attend for the Catholics and mixed marriages.

2.   Before fixing a date for the wedding, the partners are advised to contact first the marriage officer (priest) whom they want to officiate at their marriage.

3.   Partners who want to get married in another place of some faith group or different faith must get written permission from their proper pastor where they are parish members.

4.   Couples who want to get married in another Christian church must get dispensation to do so from their bishop via parish priest/pastor.

5.   Couples must make an appointment with their marriage officer (priest) well in advance to get the government and church's marriage papers done.

6.   To get these marriage papers done, the partners must bring their baptism [issued within the last six (6) months] or church membership certificates, church tax cards up to dates, ID cards [and passports] and a letter of permission from one's parish priest/pastor along.

7.   For the widow and widower, death certificates of the deceased spouse; and the divorcee decree or/and annulment by the church, as additional documents to those stated in No. 6 must be produced to the marriage  officer/priest.

8.   The marriage registration must take place three (3) months in advance at the parish where the couples intend to get married.

9.   The banns are to be called in the respective churches three (3) consecutive Sundays before the marriage takes place.

10.  The baptism cards which the couples are bringing for marriage registration must be issued within the last six (6) months.

11.   When the couples come for the registration of the marriage, they should bring the names of the witnesses to their marriage.

12.   The couples have to take care of flower arrangements, liturgy and music for the marriage ceremony in church, if need be.

13.   After the marriage ceremony, when the marriage register has been signed the newly-wed couples are given marriage certificate and endorsed baptism or church membership certificates.

14.   The newly-wed couples are kindly asked to present themselves to their respective parish communities during a Sunday service as married couple.

15.   The marriage officer (priest) is only authorized to issue a marriage certificate to the couples on the date of marriage.

16.   The phrase by or without ante-nuptial contract only the word by or without as the case may be filled in. The term "In" or "Out" of community of property must not be used and none of the printed words must be deleted. In the case of by ante-nuptial contract documentary proof of it from the Attorney must be attached to the marriage register. If a couple is married without ante-nuptial contract, it simply means that this marriage is in community of property. No documentary proof is needed.

17.   Do not delete or change incorrect information on your church documents, as this action will only invalidate your document for acceptance at any institution.
